(video) Tutorial: Simple Easter Card

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

I did three takes of this card tutorial because I ran out of time (turns out 7min30sec is not enough to make a simple card – eep!) and fumbled my words.
In the end, some stuff was already done to save on video time but if you do want clarification on anything, just ask! If you havent already, watch my How-To video on Heat Embossing which is used in this card.

Supplies:
:: 1x bright green A5 card, folded in half, with 1″x1″ window cut/punched out
:: 1x light green paper, cut to fit inside the card (eyeballed)
:: 1x 1″x1″ aluminum foil, decorated
:: 1x 2″x2″ white card, stamped/decorated
:: 1x yellow card, slightly larger than the white decorated card (eyeballed)
:: 1x funky coloured paper band (eyeballed, but roughly 1″x4 1/2″)
:: Easter greeting sticker/stamp

You could also make variations of this card with landscape folding, adding brads or ribbons, changing colours, adding more windows and foil, adding a leaf insert instead of the glued page, and lots more. I’d love to see your creations!

So, today I was feeling adventurous and decided to give a video tutorial a try (thank you to those who voted “yes please”). Oh. My. Word. So much planning! I’m using my Fuji FinePix for the video, and since I only have a 512meg card, I can tell you now the videos wont be longer than 8 minutes each.

I wasnt aware how much planning goes into this. Seriously. I briefly thought it over in my head, and kept realising more and more things to be aware of, etc. I’ll probably only do a video once a month, but hopefully I’ll do two (a How-To and a Tutorial). Tomorrow I’m filming the tutorial that will use today’s result, so do keep an eye out for it! It’ll be Easter themed (albeit a little late to actually make easter cards).

So, without further ado, my Very First How-To Video. I hope you like it (quality will get better as I play around with editing software – suggestions/help from fellow tutorial-makers welcome!!!):

Happy Easter!

Finally!!

So after a month or so of waiting, my new cellphone finally arrived! I was pleasantly surprised when my cousin (who works at MTN) phoned me to tell me they received two stock of the phone I wanted, and one had my name on it. Naturally, I squealed and danced and squealed some more and then gleefully phoned the bf to tell-him-the-great-news-and-when-could-we-pick-it-up?!?! Needless to say we dashed through that same afternoon! He signed, (he had to come with because the contract is under his name), I said “yay!” a couple more times, hugged my cousin, hugged my bf, and the phone was mine! The Nokia E71!

So since yesterday afternoon, I’ve been happily showing anyone and everyone my new phone. It certainly takes some getting used to, but its been great so far. I was using the 6300 ,which has been really good to me, so the new features of the E71 are getting me excited, even though it might not be anything new to some people.

Some of the highlights for me, in no particular order:

  • Dictionary (an hour before I got the phone, I was needing a dictionary. My phone would have come in handy then.)
  • QWERTY keyboard (a blessing and a curse…more on that later)
  • Wireless LAN (now I dont have to run up a phonebill when at home, I can just surf/chat on mxit via the internet)
  • QuickOffice (Word, Excell, and Powerpoint, PDF Reader – doubt I’ll use them all, but cool nontheless!)
  • Email
  • Print function
  • “Switch” (I can make a ‘Home’ mode with family & friends contacts and a ‘Work’ mode with business contacts, and switch between the two after office hours so business calls dont come through)
  • Garmin (navigation software) compatibility
  • A more detailed diary function (now I have everything in here – no forgetting those gym classes!)
  • The ability to reject a specific phone number/contact (havent found or tried this yet, but I remember reading about it in the manual)
  • Skype/Fring compatibility
  • Flash player (handier than you think)
  • More advance alarm/reminder system
  • 2gig microSD card incl
  • RSS feeds

That’s all I can think of off the top of my head. The menus are great to use, and very user-friendly (there is a tutorial if you need it). Personalisation is easy and I quickly downloaded a few themes to fit my phone. More on that later. Same with ringtones, I just copied some mp3′s to my phone and set them as ringtones. Easy. But what else can you expect from a Nokia, right? Right.

Other stats include (if you’re too lazy to check out the gsmarena link):

  • Symbian OS 9.2, Series 60 v3.1 UI (operating system)
  • Battery life: Stand-by Up to 410 h (2G) / 480 h (3G)
  • Battery life: Talk time Up to 10 h 30 min (2G) / 4 h 30 min (3G)
  • Battery life: Music play Up to 18 h
  • Internal Memory: 110 MB storage, 128 MB RAM
  • 114 x 57 x 10 mm in size (thinnest SmartPhone on the market)
  • 127 g
  • Screen size: 320 x 240 pixels, 2.36 inches
  • Micro USB connection.

Ok, ok, so what’s wrong with it? Not much, that I can assure you. The only things that are bothering me at this point are the following (in no particular order):

  • Key sizes (they’re tiny, and I keep feeling like my nails are going to scratch the characters off)
  • Number buttons (you have to push the function key to change the letters to numbers -except in parts where you can only type numbers like when dialing – but the part that annoys me is you have to do that for each number. If there is a Number Mode toggle button, I havent found it yet ~Edit: found it!! Double click the function button – duh!! LOL~)
  • Games and themes (they have to be tailored for the landscape screen, otherwise themes stretch and games look odd)
  • Snoozing (I can only snooze for 5min at a time whereas my old phone could be set for 15min, allowing me to wake up slowly over two snoozes/30min)
  • Camera (you have to focus with the “T” button, and press the shutter with the main navigation/middle button…a bit cumbersome, and it struggles to focus in low light…photo quailty is decent at 3.2mp)

That’s about all I have at this point, I’ll update later if I find anything else major to comment about. Feel free to ask questions, or if you have an E71, feel free to tell me your thoughts about it!

A few links for free cellphone stuff (save anything you download to your PC and transfer to your phone from there, otherwise you pay dl fees):

  • Zedge – great for themes!!
  • Mobango – lots of stuff here, but some is incorrectly labelled
  • Mobile9 – with a title of “Ooomph your phone”, how can it not be great!
  • MMC – specifically Nokia and Sony Ericsson themes and ringtones
  • GSM Arena – no free stuff here, but great review/stats site for ALL phones

(friends.)

I’ve been really lucky in my life to be blessed with some great friends. I’ve also been smited with some pretty nasty ones too but this post isn’t about them.

Life has been tough at times, and the friends who have seen me through those times are some pretty special people. Unfortunately, Fate decided my friendships would be intense, but never everlasting. I look at people who have get togethers with friends all the time, plan stuff together, go away together, and generally just seem to have friends around them constantly…I’ve never been one of those people. There have been times, I’ll admit, that I’ve been envious of the closeness that is shared all around me, but never including me. Maybe I’m seduced by the feeling behind having someone actually care what your thoughts are on something, or what you’ll be doing this weekend. The feeling of being important in someone’s life must be pretty great. I only briefly touched on those feelings a few times in my life, all of them fleetingly. I’ll (try to) summerize.

My best friend through primary school and part of high school moved away to Hermanus after 9 years of friendship. It sounds long, and not at all “fleeting”, but when you’re that young the friendships arent what they are when you’re older and wiser. We met in Sub B (Gr 2) and were firm friends from that year on. We share some some pretty great memories and she’s still a very near and dear friend, though we dont speak as much. She’s now married, in Knysna, and blessed with two beautiful kids.

The next major friend of mine was through high school. She came to SA from the UK and promptly filled my life with her pommy-goodness. We met in Std 6 (Gr 8/first year of high school for my USA readers), clicked easily, and were buddies from then on, sharing wild parties and many a drunken gathering together. Sadly, she moved to Durban mid-way through highschool, I was able to see her once after that, and then she moved back to the UK. I keep in touch with her regularly through Facebook, and she’s doing some pretty inspiring work as a special-needs care-giver, while studying nursing. She’s amazing and one of the most outrageous-yet-compassionate person I know!

The next friend saw me through mid-Std 8 to the end of Std 9. This friendship was a close and intense one, as we shared many of life’s Firsts together. We spent a lot of time together, partying hard, sharing, & experiencing. We shared details on our love lives with each other, gave and sought advice, and generally just had the closeness that best friends do at the blossoming age of 17. We were so similar it was scary, and a more perfect match you couldnt find. This friendship brutely came to an end when she crossed the line that no best friend should ever cross: dating the ex (behind my back). The loss of this friendship still hurts, though I see neither of them anymore. After many years of resentment, I have finally forgiven them.

My final friendship has been with a friend I met online on an international rat forum (thanks, Christy!). The friendship was destined to succeed as we both had an insane love of rats, and shared many a happy PM about torpedoes and raisins. Eventually we realised we stayed a mere 20 min from each other and decided to meet at my birthday dinner at Blowfish, on condition she failed her drivers test that day (if she passed, she’d go partying). Well, Fate intervened and she failed (yay me!) so she met me and my friends for sushi dinner. Alas, its almost certain she too will move on one day as her study visa for South Africa will expire some day (she’s Estonian), and once again I’ll be alone.

After all these curveballs Fate has thrown my way, it was only natural for me to turn to online friends. They’ll never really leave. And I guess on some level there is some security that if they did, its ok because we never really met in real life (or met that often). Believe it or not, I’m an overly-friendly person (which can be my downfall at times when people arent used to it) and I try make friends wherever I go. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. Sometimes I’m overly sensitive when a friendship attempt doesnt work out, and I’m left wondering where it was that I failed, but lately I’m loving myself more and more, and am coming to the conclusion that at this stage in my life, if you dont like me as I am, then it just will never work. Plain and simple. All my life I’ve tried to change who I am to be who I thought people would want me to be. As a result I’ve missed out on finding out who I really am, and I believe this is the root of my competitiveness. That feeling of trying to keep-up-with-the-Joneses. I used to put myself out and change my plans to suit other people, but as I get older, I find myself less likely to do so, and with less regrets and guilt.

I’m feeling more and more content with who I am and I’m proud of myself. Its been a long road, filled with lonely times and heartbreak, and although my mind shouts, “Loser!!” at me while I type, my heart tells me I am who I am and its ok.

Its ok. *content smile*
