#39. Go to every gym class for a month (12/12)

Friday, June 12th, 2009

I’ve been meaning to blog about this for ages…in fact, its on my 101 in 1001 list and I’ve been so into it, I didnt realise I’d completed it. In fact, I completed it two months ago hehe!

For years I’ve been going on and off to a small aerobics gym run by Alison, a friend of my mom’s and mine. She’s been weight training & teaching aerobics since I was 12 years old…if not longer, and she’s certainly an inspiration! Some might say she doesnt look like she teaches gym, but her strength and stamina will outpace you any time…she’s amazing and a great instructor! My mom’s been going religiously for years and years and every now and then I’ve joined her for a month or so. I’d go maybe once a week, skip a few, and then I’d go again and so on. Very erratic.

But, since April, I havent missed a class…and I feel great!! Its only three times a week, but boy are some of the classes tough! Classes consist of Katabox, Bodytone, Hi/Low, Stretch and Tone, Power Pump, and Aerobench to name a few. All consist of a lot of cardio, weights, and stretching (very important), not to mention its all great fun. I’ve tried speed walking, running and working out at home but its never the same, and lets face it, unless you’re running regularly and properly, you’re just kidding yourself (Charm City Kim, if you’re reading this, I dont mean you! :P ). I find going to gym always more disciplined, fun, and competitive in a group (friendly competitiveness is great for moral and encouragement!). I’ve also never found better results in other activities (other than horseriding…but thats a whole different blog post!!). Of course it also helps if you suppliment your exercises with a good healthy diet.

But I digress. With each passing class, I find myself feeling more and more proud each time I complete an exercise successfully without getting too tired, or even just manage more repetitions than last time – it all shows me that I’m getting more and more fit. My weak points are stomach (sit ups, crunches) and arms (push ups), but lately my legs are feeling stronger and I’m managing more sit ups/crunches than before, which is excellent. As for weight loss, I dont think I’ve lost weight, but I definately feel like I’m losing centimetres (or millimetres haha). My stomach looks & feels less flabby and my legs are feeling more toned…now its just more work on the love handles and I’m set!

The classes are held in a small church hall and are in the evenings, which do make it an awkward time for me because I’m usually the one preparing dinner, but since they start at 6:15pm, it gives me time to get home, put the chicken on defrost, load up some washing into the machine, get changed into my gym gear, grab my water and towel and off I go. Oddly enough, I haven’t seriously felt like skipping a class yet…though I have to admit, I’ve felt slightly lazy before a class, but once I’m there chatting and joking, its all good.

Speaking of chatting and joking, what makes this gym even better is once every few months, we get together after a class for snacks and drinks. Coming up in July is “Christmas in July” where everyone will bring a Christmas-type snack to share (I’m bringing Gingerbread Cookies..shh dont tell!) and we get to hang around and get to know each other a little better.

Many people come and go, maybe they find the classes too tough, or maybe they dont find them tough enough (literally impossible, unless you’re an olympic participant haha). In both cases, they should stick it out. If the classes are too tough, go at your own pace and eventually you’ll get there (trust me!), and the proud feeling you’ll have is definately worth it! On the other hand, if the classes arent tough enough, and you’re not as fit as a fiddle (I’m talking rock-solid abs, toned and lean legs, amazingly defined arms) then you’re not doing the exercises correctly. Plain and simple.

I’ve been lucky that my mom has been doing gym for so many years, I’ve learnt a lot from her. From this, I’m able to avoid what many others fall prey to, and I’m able to spot it immediately when they do (I rarely say anything because people seem far more concerned with taking the easy route and dont like to be told they’re not doing it right and having to actually put some effort in).

Working your triceps, for example, is an easy enough exercise to do. Stand with feet hip distance apart, lean slightly forward and extend your arm back in a smooth, controlled motion (I use 1kg weights in each hand). The point to this exercise is to keep your upper arm as still as possible, and to resist against yourself in your movements (in other words, when you bring your lower arm down, dont just drop it, bring it back in a controlled movement). What I notice people doing is swinging their arms, using momentum, and letting their upper arm sway back and forth. The result: “Pfft, this exercise isnt tough at all! I dont feel anything!”. Same with other exercises (even something simple like not turning your foot in the correct angle in some positions), but if people just keep at it and pay attention to what they’re doing and what the instructor is saying, they’ll get a much better workout and they’ll find themselves feeling great in no time!

I apologise for the long, rambling post, but this really is something I’m very proud of achieving, especially given my personal track record (no pun intended haha) for gymming. I think I’ve earned my right to ramble haha. So, wherever you are, if you’re like I was and hate working out, hang in there, one day it’ll all feel right and you’ll be addicted (like I am now)! Good luck!!!

RPG (Role Playing Games) ie: Neverwinter Nights, etc (33.0%, 2 Votes)
I dont play games (33.0%, 2 Votes)

Hmm not what I expected at all :P I thought FPS would win out here, but seems RPG’s are the most popular (nothing wrong with that, I like RPG’s).

Next poll is up, not gaming related, but just a random one everyone should be able to vote on. Thanks for voting! :)

The Sims 3

Friday, June 5th, 2009

(yes, thats me in the photo haha!) So the day I’ve been waiting for since 2007 finally arrived, June 2: The Sims 3 Global Release Day! Of course, as soon as I could, I pre-ordered my Collector’s Edition copy and my bf was so amazingly sweet to buy it for me as an early birthday gift!

“Collector’s Edition!?”, I hear you say.
“Yes indeed!”, I reply, with a knowing smile.
“What do you get with it?”, you enquire, intrigued.
“Aha!”, I say while rubbing my hands together gleefully…

The Collector’s Edition comes with the base game (which incidently is Mac-friendly), a free download of the European Styled Sports Car (see photo insert towards bottom of this post), R114 worth of SimPoints to spend online (total of 1000 points!), a Hints & Tips Guide (not as great as I thought…they really could have done more with this), and a 2gig green USB Plumbob™ Flashdrive (check out the photo, its just toooooo cute, seriously!!!). I dont think I’ll ever use the flashdrive (I have an 8gig anyway) lest it get sratched but its my first Collector’s Item of anything (my sister bought a gold Lord of the Rings authentic ring with elvish engraving and everything for R2k which is her Collector’s Item) and its super cute and I’m so proud of it!

As for the game, well it blows my mind! I’m extra happy with all the new features and how they’ve kicked it up a notch (pun intended, those who’ve played will know what I’m talking about…if they have hungry chef-sims hehe).

After playing for a while, my sim progressed to the dating stage, and eventually got married and had a kid. However, when she went into labour, she had the option of having the baby at home or at the hospital (new feature!). I chose the hospital of course. So I expected her to call a cab (she couldnt afford her own car at that time) but instead she hopped on her bicycle and cycled to the hospital…in labour!! Shortly after she arrived (you cant follow them inside, though its rumoured to be part of the expansions at a later stage) her husband ran in after her to be there for the birth, which I thought was a sweet touch.

After her own kid grew up to the teenager stage, she was working out at the local gym (here you can follow them inside) and an NPC-sim was working out in front of the gym’s TV. I noticed she was pregnant. Well, apparently doing jumping jacks in your final hours of pregnancy is a big no-no as she promptly went into labour. Other sims gathered around to watch, and I offered to take her to the hospital (also a new feature, and there’s me and that hospital again hehe) which I did…but this time in my car haha. Shortly after we went in, the father-to-be dashed in and my sim stayed to watch the birth (after which she had a happy Moodlet for the next while for Witnessing a Birth).

Other weird but funny things that have happened include a sim dying at my sim’s birthday party – talk about a mood killer! People kept mourning! But I guess thats what happens when you invite someone who’s on their death-bed haha.

There are so many cool things I just cant think of them all right now and it would take a bunch of pages for me to elaborate on anything (if you have questions, just ask!) but a few favourites are:

:: Ever-changing neighbourhood – really makes you feel a part of a community. Sims get married, move out, have kids, etc all around you all the time. (tip: read the newspaper daily for neighbourhood updates!)
:: CAS (Create-A-Sim) – this has been revolutionised and you can now make your sims as thin or as obese as you want. You can also customise everything from muscle tone to the shape of the tip of your sim-nose!
:: CASt (Create-A-Style) – this is what we’ve been waiting for FOR EVER! Everything is customisable! You can make matching furniture, clothing and shoes, wallpaper and flooring! Everything! I even made pink appliances!
:: New placement options – this bugged me quite a bit in TS2. If you had a couch that took up three squares, and a TV that took up two squares, you couldnt centre the TV with the couch. You could either have the TV aligned with the first two squares, or the last two…but now, you can work in half-squares, allowing things to be centred and you can finally place items at an angle to make a more pleasing layout!
:: Age control – you can choose whether your sims have short lives (25 sim-days) or longer lives (1000 sim-days)
:: New work options – during your working hours, you control how your sims spend their time. Choose from Word Hard to Suck Up To Boss to Slack Off. Each option has its own reactions and consequences, so choose wisely ;)
:: Faster loading times – huge plus! Loading saved games are quicker as well as entering CAS/St within the game and this makes the whole purchase worthwhile on its own!

Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Of course I miss all the stuff I had in TS2, like weather and vacations, but I’m uber happy with TS3 and how they’ve created it! Very happy! Very, very happy!

So now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to Sim! Hehe!

Ready to collect!

Monday, June 1st, 2009

I’m so excited to say my copy of The Sims 3 is ready to collect!!! I’m beyond excited! Now I just need to find an excuse to leave work sometime tomorow to go and collect it (and pray my petrol lasts the journey haha)!! I’ve been waiting since about two years ago for this game to be released, and the bf was such a sweetie to buy it for me as an early birthday gift (my bday is in Aug)!!

For those who arent familiar with this new Sims, they’ve added a whole bunch of new features, and totally revamped the game. The biggest change is being able to adjust the weight of each individual sim.

Sounds like a small change, but we’ve been clamouring for more customisation of sims from early days. So, gone are the days of every sim either being thin or fat, we will now have almost anorexic right through to obese! Woot! The next biggie are the “Traits”. Traits such as vegetarian, kleptomaniac, lucky, hates children, etc will define your sims choices and path in life, making each sim more unique than ever before!

And in a stroke of genius, the creators decuded to help us out and incorporate a Create-a-Style feature. In The Sims 2, I always found myself wishing they had matching furniture. Sometimes I just really loved that three seater couch, but wished there was a two seater love seat to match…but now, I can make everything, yes…everything, match! I can make the walls, floors, clothes, furniture upholstery, and furniture itself all pink leopard print…if I wanted. Yes, everything is customisable!!! I LOVE IT!!!

On top of that, they’re replacing ‘Wants’ & ‘Fears’ with ‘Wishes’. You will be able to Promise a wish to a sim, and then help them fulfill it, gaining Life Points to help your sim along with bonuses to aid and assist. Sound confusing, well I’ll be sure to elaborate after I collect and install my copy!

This game is gonna rock! :D
