Nice to know there are still some romantics out there. My choice is shown in bold (same with all polls), but Valentine’s Day isnt a huge deal for me. Moreso when I was in highschool and the school sent out roses from people who were secret admirers. Though it sucked not to be given a rose that someone bought for you haha. Such is the life of highschool.

I spent Valentine’s Day watching The Parlotone’s with my boyfriend and some family, but more on that in my next post. Thanks for voting! New poll: Are you happy with the way you look?

I’m interested to hear any love-stories related to V-Day so please do share! Were you proposed to on V-day? Was your child, or you for that matter, born on V-Day? Or perhaps you have an embarressing story to share from school days? Whatever it is, if it’s V-Day related, I want to hear it!

Thanks for voting and thanks for the continued support!

Dishwasher Blues

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

About a month ago the bf and I bought a dishwasher. I can hear some of you saying, “welcome to the wonderful world of technology!” or “sheesh, only now?” but let me tell you, I always hated dishwashers because when I was younger, it was my sister’s duty to pack the dishwasher and mine to unpack. Unfortunately the dishwasher always needed unpacking at the most inopportune times. Like when I was just about to watch TV, or just about to read a book, or go out or something. Mom was pretty strict that the dishwasher was not to sit with dishes inside it for days, so it had to be unpacked within an hour or so of it being done.

Anyway. So finally I caved and said, “ok, let’s buy a dishwasher” and we did. I can happily say I’m a changed woman! I love the dishwasher! And the best part, I get to pack it and the bf unpacks it! Yay! For weeks now, I’ve only had to do a select few dishes, as some things we dont put in the dishwasher. For example, knives from our Nikkai Titanium set cant go in because the gold stripe will fade off, as well as our highball glasses as the patterns are fading. But it’s been bliss, not having to wash dishes. Pure bliss.

Until it broke. Yes, not even a month old and it leaks water onto the floor. Its not the tap, we checked, it’s definately the dishwasher. So now, we cant use it because water is coming in from the tap but not entering the washer itself. The good news is they’re coming on Monday or Tuesday to look at it, since it’s still under warranty but the bad news is, as I type, I try not to think about the load of dishes we had to unload from the dishwasher that are now sitting in my kitchen waiting to be washed. Yes, you’re probably pulling a face and saying, “eww!” but I just cant bring myself to go back to washing dishes. To think, I survived years without a dishwasher, but now a week of not having one sucks!

It just sucks! I’ve become spoilt haha.

Community Chest Carnival!

Friday, February 5th, 2010

The Community Chest Carnival is probably my most favourite carnival ever (website isnt updated for 2010, but I emailed them for dates for this year, see below)! I’ve been going ever since I was a child, and I still remember going with my parents, and my dad would find the large tower with the Red Feather logo on it and that would be our meeting point if we got split up (this was before cellphones, of course). We never needed to use the tower, but its a nice memory of mine.

The carnival itself is more of a food fair really. They have tents based on various countries and the authentic food you can buy there. For example, the China tent will have Chow Mein, etc, Italian will have pizzas and pastas, and the Mexican tent will have Tequila! They also have an oyster stall which definately have the best oysters I have ever tasted! And they’re priced great (last time it was R6 per oyster or R20 for 4) too which is a bonus. Also, if you go, you simply HAVE to try the Cannoli. A pastry tube filled with Ricotta sweet cheese and dusted with icing sugar…its divine!! Its one of the first places I seek out, and I buy at least two every time I go because they sell out quickly!

As well as food, they have stalls selling bric-a-brac, candyfloss, pancakes, corn on the cob, toys for kids, carnival games for prizes, etc. My most favourite place of all though is the Lion’s Club book sale. It is a HUGE tent (though it was smaller than usual last year) filled with books, all sold by the kilo. Last year it was R25 per kg and the guys are so nice there, they dont think twice to give you a magazine or three for free if its in your pile. I’m forever on the lookout for a young-adult series of books, which yes are now below my reading age, I still enjoy. This book sale is pretty much the only time I ever find them, so its like a tradition to go a-huntin’ for these books now.

They also have rides such as The Swings, a very scary cage version of The Boat (which goes all the way around!), Bumper Cars and other such rides. I find these creepy as they moan and groan while in use, and the prices are normally a little too high to be worth riding in my opinion. If you have kids or are younger and love rides, then it’s perfect.

If you’ve never been to the Community Chest Carnival, it’s definately something to try. It happens every year at the end of Feb/beginning of March and this year the dates and prices are:

Wednesday 24 February and Thursday 25 February from 18:00 to 23:00:
Adults (+18) R15.00
Children U6 (toddlers) Free
Family Ticket (Two Adults / Two Persons under 18) R 25.00
Persons under 18 R 5.00
Pensioners R 5.00

Friday 26 February from 17:00 to 24:00 and Saturday 27 February from 12:00 to 23:00:
Adults (+18) R 20.00
Children U6 (toddlers) Free
Family Ticket (Two Adults / Two Persons under 18) R 50.00
Persons under 18 R 15.00
Pensioners R 15.00

It’s at Maynardville in Wynberg. Just follow the cars and get there early if you want parking…it gets veeery crowded!

If you’re going for the books, go on a Wednesday as the books go quickly by Friday. If you’re also not keen on lots of semi-drunk kids, go during the week as well, as although there are bands per age group (you get a certain colour band if you’re over the drinking age limit, and you’re not allowed into drinking areas if you dont have that band), some kids still manage to get a little drunk, but its nowhere near what it was like when I was young and they didnt have bands!

Hope to see you there! I can’t wait!

PS: If you’re on Facebook, RSVP to the event and please invite your friends!

Hmm I still have my doubts about the World Cup and Cape Town…I’m dreading it actually. I can just imagine the chaos on the roads *shudder*

In other news I’ve started logging my incomes and expenditures. It’s on my 101 list, so thats a bonus too. There has been so much happening, I’m not sure where to start. I get saddened by all the things I could blog about, but get too tired to do so and then when I do blog, it doesnt seem important anymore.

But, when I got paid last month, I treated the bf to some mexican dinner at an awesome restaurant. It was nice to finally have some cash to treat him to dinner for a change, since he’s always doing nice things for me and paying for me whenever we go out. Anyway, we ordered our drinks (a jug of Margeritas, what else!) and he got a phonecall from work which he had to take. While he was outside taking a work call, someone else who I didnt know sat down at my table and proclaimed I was their blind date, Miranda. I tried not to giggle as I didnt know whether it was a pick up line or if the poor sod actually was on a blind date. I politely smiled and explained no, I wasnt his blind date and eventually he went back to the bar. I went back to what I was doing before and about five minutes later I saw him join another table with a group of people. They looked over to me and saw I noticed him sitting there, so I’m guessing it was a pick up line.

It got me thinking about what I would have done had I been single but after some thought, I decided I would have joined them and got to know them. Its a pretty ingenious way of meeting people, really. It made me smile.

Anyway, new poll up about pick up lines. Check it out and have a vote! Thanks!
