Square Foot Gardening

Hey everyone.
Just a quick update on whats been going on in my life lately. The most major thing is this last weekend the fiance and I relandscaped the garden! We have an apartment garden, so its not huge, but the flower bed was large and ungainly and I struggled to keep anything living in it. The soil was horrid and the grass was overrunning it.
So, eventually we gathered up the energy and set about redoing it. It took two weekends (one was just buying some stones and soil) but we got it done. If anyone is looking for a reasonably priced nursery, I can highly recommend Cape Garden Centre for their prices! Its totally worth the drive out there to Joostenberg Vlakte, even if you’re in the Southern Suburbs like me. We saved over R140 going there vs Starke Ayres in Rondebosch! Doesnt seem like much, but with prices going up these days, every bit counts. Plus, R140 saved is R140 more to spend on gardening goodies!
So, we pulled up the plants, weeded the bed, and lay down some raised flower beds (they’re not quite square, but by the time I found out about Square Foot Gardening I had already layed out one raised bed lol), and we surrounded those beds with rocks and pebbles. Some of the plants were put into pots, so hopefully they’ll get to live nicely in there, all happy-like without the grass taking over.
Beneath the stones we also lay a weed cover (black material to stop the weeds growing through). If it helps, you can buy it from CGCentre for R169 for 10m, or you can buy it for R7 per m from Kehl’s! I only recognised the material once I got home, but now I know.
I have before and after shots, which I’ll post on the weekend sometime. For more info on Square Foot Gardening (totally revolutionary, and deserves its own post when I have time), check out these blogs
