Let’s Begin…
For first-time bird owners, we recommend starting with smaller, easier-to-manage birds such as budgies, canaries, or cockatiels. These species are friendly, relatively low-maintenance, and adapt well to new environments.
Small birds should have some seed in their diet, ideally a 50/50 seed and pellet mix
The answer depends on where you live and what’s available. Recommended brands include Roudybush, Zupreem, TOPS, and Harrisons. Unfortunately, we don’t have those brands here, so choose a pellet that details its processing methods on its website or packaging and provides a list of ingredients. Preferably, salt (sodium) should be omitted, or at the very least, towards the bottom of the list.
Ensure the cage is spacious enough for your bird to move around comfortably and spread its wings. The bars should be appropriately spaced to prevent escape or injury. To create a stimulating environment, include perches, toys, and food and water dishes.
The size depends on the breed of bird you buy, but while the largest is always best, a minimum cage size of 90x60x120 cm is recommended.
It’s crucial to maintain a clean and healthy environment for your bird. We suggest spot-cleaning the cage daily and performing a more thorough cleaning at least once weekly. This includes washing perches, toys, and food and water dishes.
Birds only show they’re sick when they’re almost at death’s door. If your bird shows signs of lethargy (more sleepy than usual), vomiting, or persistent fluffing of feathers, get them to a vet immediately.
Absolutely! Birds are intelligent creatures and can be trained using positive reinforcement techniques, like Clicker Training. Start with simple commands like “step up” and gradually introduce more complex tricks. Patience and consistency are key.
Birds are social animals and need daily interaction to stay happy and healthy. Spend time talking, playing, and bonding with your bird. If you can’t be home often, consider getting a companion bird to keep them company.
Provide a quiet, secure space to help your bird adjust to their new home. Gradually introduce them to the household and establish a daily routine. Offering familiar toys and perches can also ease the transition.
